Top genetics airfreighted to Dubai

Last year we had the opportunity to export a load of Jerseys to Dubai. This was a specific order that required top quality animals backed by excellent genetics. I was given 4 criteria that the animals had to achieve for them to be selected:-

  • They had to be in calf
  • They had to have an exceptional pedigree
  • They had to have very good milk production with good protein and butter fat percentages
  • They had to have very good type

I was very grateful to my good friend, Pete Durham, who gave me full access to his herd, Glynton Jerseys. I rate his herd as one of the best herds in the country.

After we had selected the animals we dried them off, completed all the blood tests and vaccinated the cows.
They were then transported to O.R TAMBO airport. At the cargo section they were transferred into a custom-made crate and a couple of hours later loaded onto the plane and transported to Abu Dhabi.
Unfortunately there was a long delay at the Customs department and clearing was a bit longer than usual. This was not very pleasant as the animals had to wait in the warehouse at 40degrees Celsius for a few hours. Through this experience, procedures where clarified making the next shipment run considerably smoother.

Thankfully they all finally arrived at the farm in good condition and are doing well in their new home and environment. These animals truely showcase South Africas exceptional quality.
