Southern Cape Jersey Championships 2024

From the 29th of February to the 1st of March 2024, Swellendam played host to the Southern Cape Jersey Championships. This event showcased some of the finest Jersey cows in the region.

The judging was led by one of our own, Guy Bird, who faced the daunting task of evaluating the impressive lineup of Jersey cows. Rumors had circulated the day before that this year’s judging would be particularly challenging. The quality of the showcased Jerseys made selecting winners a formidable feat.

Every Jersey showcased told a story of hard work, care, and a commitment to breeding excellence. The Southern Cape Jersey Championships not only served as a competition but also as a testament to the collective effort of the region’s farmers in nurturing and showcasing the best of their herds.

A heartfelt congratulations go out to every participant and winner for their dedication and commitment. It’s no small feat to present a cow at a show, and the participating breeders showcased an impressive array of top-quality Jerseys. We extend our gratitude to those who made this event possible. It was a privilege to witness, and for Guy, who expertly judged the competition, it was indeed a challenging but rewarding experience.

Cattle For Africa also had the distinct pleasure of showing Dr. Gregory Bwalya around the Garden Route to showcase what the Southern Cape region has to offer. Dr. Bwalya is a distinguished veterinarian from Zambia with extensive involvement in the veterinary aspects of exports and imports into and from Zambia. Dr. Bwalya’s expertise has often been instrumental in our export endeavors. He visited local herds in the area and attended the show in Swellendam. From the sidelines, he enthusiastically “judged” the Jerseys being showcased, revealing a genuine passion for the competition and a keen eye.
